Learn more about us and our European project.

The Eastern Frontier Initiative (TEFI) was founded in late 2023 by leading publishers from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, including Wyborcza, SME, 444.hu and PressOne, as well as the Dutch investigative portal Bellingcat. The aim of the consortium, co-founded by the European Commission, is a regional journalistic alliance focusing on security challenges in the region. The materials created as part of the initiative will enable millions of recipients and international analysts and security specialists to better understand the Central and Eastern European perspective on this issue.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 is arguably the most important event since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, changing the geopolitical status quo and shaking the world economy. The publishers participating in the project felt that their mission should now be to explain the current situation to readers in a broader context and raise awareness of the threats facing Central and Eastern Europe. That is why they also decided to improve their OSINT (open source intelligence) skills, using the experience and know-how of Bellingcat specialists.

Security is a multidimensional issue. In addition to the national one, access to natural resources and energy, environmental and economic issues, cybersecurity and the individual preparation of European citizens are also important. These are the topics that will be devoted to the publications on the Eastern Frontier website, which are being developed by a team of over 20 journalists from editorial offices in four countries and many well-known international experts.

As of April 18, 2024, the English-language Eastern Frontier website will publish all project-related publications and articles in the 5 languages of the consortium members.

The Eastern Frontier Initiative is 80% co-funded by the European Union through the NEWS-Journalism Partnership Programme. The grant for all activities and participants amounts to EUR 1,076,718 for the 24-month project period. However, the views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union or the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). The EU and EACEA are not responsible for them.
